A large mural on the walls of Kelburn Castle, Scotland, created by Brazilian graffiti artists Os Gêmeos, is being threatened with removal. Os Gêmeos completed the mural in 2007. It was originally permitted by the local council for a three-year period. During this time, the work became increasingly recognized as one of the world’s most popular examples of street art.
As discussions on the mural’s future continue between the council and Lord Glasgow, the castle’s owner, a worldwide campaign to save the graffiti has started. Over 3,500 people have signed up to register support on a dedicated Facebook page. In Brazil, news of the mural’s threatened status was reported on Fantástico, a peak time Saturday night TV show, watched by 60 million viewers.
Os Gêmeos are twin brothers from São Paulo, renowned worldwide for their street art. Following their early work in Brazil, the pair have recently completed public commissions in international locations, including New York, Berlin and Lisbon.
